Moms of preschool-1st graders: this post is for you! G and I love Zingo games! This one is Sight Word Zingo. Before he was learning to read we did regular Zingo to get ready for TK (transitional kindergarten). In the regular version it’s a race to fill up bingo cards with special tiles. The tiles have pictures with the word on the bottom. It teaches little ones to think fast and that letters associate to words. They start associating the letters with the pictures and really get ready to learn to read.
Sight Word Zingo is a step up from the original version. It helps your child to learn to read Sight words. The Zingo cards have fun drawings with words written in each box. The drawings sometimes give a small hint about what the word it. Like the word said is in a word bubble. This time the tiles have no pictures. When we started playing we started really slowly. I just helped G match the tile with the word on his card and said the words for him copy. Eventually he picked it up and started learning to read the sight words on his own! We are a competitive family and he loves beating me at games so this got fun quickly! In the beginning G really wanted to stick with the original version since that one had become easy for him. So we started playing in small increments. Once he got the hang of it he stopped wanting to play the old one since it was too easy.
Apparently there are math and spelling versions as well! We haven’t tried those, YET!
If you wear glasses you NEED one of these little machines! It’s an Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner, but I use it mostly to clean our glasses!
All 6 of us need glasses or contacts. Most of us wear sunglasses as well. That’s a lot of eyewear all over my house and none of it is ever clean! I feel like I’m always cleaning my glasses but they never feel super clean. There always seems to be a thin film on them and the boys’ glasses are even worse.
I ordered this on Amazon. When I got it I filled it with water & a little dish soap, dropped in my glasses, and set the timer for just over 400 seconds. When I took them out my glasses actually seemed like they had a stronger prescription! They must have really been DIRTY! I ended up cleaning all of our glasses. Then I cleaned sunglasses. I’m sure they were full of sweat and sunscreen and other grossness!
If you have of these what do you use it for? I think it’s even good for toothbrushes!
My biggest regret when remodeling this house is not putting tile throughout! As a mom of 4 boys and 2 dogs my carpet gets DIRTY! We spent $5K on pet press carpet upstairs but were constantly renting a rug doctor from the grocery store to clean it. The rug doctor would work but a few days later, after we returned it, the stains would come back up! So I started researching for something that would work better and something I could use myself instead of waiting for my husband to come home and clean carpets after a long day of work! All my reading lead me to the Bissell ProHeat Revolution Pet Pro Carpet cleaner. (Could it have a longer name???)
It works! Here’s what I like:
It’s light enough where I can use it without help
It’s small enough to store inside
It has separate tanks for clean and dirty water
I don’t have to push the squirt button and I can just vacuum with it if I need
It really freaking works
The stains don’t come back
The dog in the picture, Chloë, is 13 years old. She’s starting to have bladder problems so she has more accidents. The younger one, Oreo, is a male and since Chloë is peeing in the house Oreo thinks he needs to mark his territory too. It’s terrible!!!! I know we should keep them downstairs on the tile at all times but they are family and sleep with the boys. Thankfully this is now easier to clean with my Bissell carpet cleaner!
Here’s the same area a few days later. I waited to take the after picture to make sure the stain doesn’t resurface!
If you have pets and carpet I HIGHLY suggest getting this carpet cleaner! If you have mostly tile check out my review on the Bissell mop I love!
Getting to kids to eat healthy is sometimes hard. Now that summer is here it’s a little easier. It just takes a little prep work! I have 4 boys. They LOVE fruit, but if I buy fruit and leave it in the fridge it will go bad! On the other hand if I wash the fruit my kids will make it disappear!!!
Lots of people just since their fruits and vegetables. That grosses me out! I think of all the people at the market touching the fruit. You don’t know if they just picked their nose in the car on the way to the grocery store! You don’t know when the last time they washed their hands was or if they are sick. What is rinsing under cold water for a second going to do? I soak my fruit. I use a little bit of fruit and veggie wash in a bowl of water and a couple drops of citrus oil. Sometimes I do vinegar instead of the veggie wash. I read it helps just as well. Soaking your fruits and veggies will not only clean them but will kill any mold spores your berries have so your fruit will last longer! Before I discovered this trick my raspberries and strawberries grew mold so quickly I always had to toss them out before my boys got around to eating them! Now, I don’t know how long they last before getting moldy because they disappear!
Make sure to rinse your fruit well after soaking!!!! This is especially true if you are soaking in a water and vinegar mixture. You do not want you fruit to taste like vinegar. I rinse and rub each fruit one by one, then put them in a colander to drain before laying them out to dry. I know this sounds long and tedious but it takes about 5 minutes to do all of it! They only need to soak for 2 minutes, but I usually go longer because I get distracted.
Last step is to put your freshly washed fruit in the refrigerator where the kids can easily see and reach it. I leave mine in a glass bowl at eye level for my little ones. It’ super easy for them to see and grab. Now when they are hungry I just tell them to grab a fruit. Before when I would tell them to get fruit they would whine and ask me to wash it for them. It was super annoying because it was always when I was in the middle of something. Washing all the fruit at once right when I get home from the market really makes things easier for all of us! This whole bowl will be gone today I’m sure!
We bought our house two years ago. Every time the seller was able to let us see it, it was night time and the house was dark! We had spent two years looking for a house that had a pool, big yard, 5 bedrooms, was the right elementary school, and was in our budget! This was the first one that checked all the boxes! It has good bones, but I had no idea what I was getting into until I got the keys on my birthday! I thought the carpet was gray. Wow was I wrong. The people actually left their gross couches and this is what the carpet looked like when we moved them out of the family room! We ended up staying in an apartment while waiting for escrow to close on this house and we had to extend our stay because the house was in such bad shape once we could see it in the day light! First thing we did was have the floors ripped out, holes patched, and walls painted! It’s amazing what that can do!
My husband painted the tiles on the fireplace and painted the “mantle” white to give it a little pop.
Here it is our new family room after the makeover today! I LOVE it! It’s been a work in progress because we’ve had so many home projects over the past few years, but we found the perfect silver tables from Z Gallerie over Mother’s day and now they are here! I’m currently on the hunt for a big white tray to put on the table with some pretty books and candles. The only thing I don’t like about the table is that my roomba gets stuck under it. It’s just like a half inch too short!
My husband found this box for me at Home Goods. This is where we put the remote. Now that it has a place we don’t lose it so often! I also shove anything on the table in here if people are coming over!
We bought the chair at Ashley furniture when we first moved here 2 years ago. I sprayed it down with scotch guard to protect it from my boy’s feet. They love to cuddle up on it with a blanket and put their feet up on that white fabric! The Be Kind Be Brave pillow is from amazon. It is just a cover so you will either need to stuff it with an old pillow or buy pillow inserts if you don’t have one and want to pick this up! The wicker basket was from our old house. JT used pink spray paint and painted it pink for me. It is full of blankets and I have some small, open jar candles in it so the blankets don’t smell like dog and boys feet between washes!
We love our doggies so even though this room is pretty we have a place for them to be cozy and with us! This dog bed was $25 at Costco! The outer cover is machine washable. Of course I bought two since we have two pups, but Oreo marked his as soon as we got it. The outside is washable, but the inside is not! So we washed the outside, stuffed it with old blankets and use it under my husband’s desk!
I hope you like our family room makeover! It’s been so fun transforming this room! I would love to see your before and afters! So please add them in the comments!
That really depends on a few things. Obviously a 200 lb man would need more water than a 6 year old little girl!
By now most of us have heard you should drink half your body weight in oz of water each day. But you also need to think about where you live and how active you are. You really should drinking between half an ounce to an ounce of water each day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75 to 150 ounces of water each day.
It’s starting to get hot in California! It was over 100 this weekend! On days like that we need more than jus the half ounce per pound. Also my boys are athletes. When they have soccer tournaments or practice they need more water. They trying telling me they drank their daily allotment, but no with the heat and exercise they need more!
Now you know how much water you need, but getting it in is another problem! I’ve tried tracking websites. I’ve tried using pen and paper to remember. Somehow I always ended up with a million half full water glasses all over the house and no idea how much anyone drank! Finally I went to target and bought a bunch of giant cups for my two oldest boys and me so we can keep track. My oldest uses the silver ones, second oldest uses the black, mine are pink and teal. Each night I wash and refill the cups. So we can just grab and go throughout the day. The water stays cold. We know who’s is who’s and it’s easy to track. Once your color of cuts is gone you’ve had enough water for the day! It’s that easy. When looking for cups make sure you pick ones that fit in your car’s cup holders! That’s so important. If they don’t fit and you can’t take them with you easily that will make a huge difference on how much you drink!
The only things I don’t like about the cups I chose are they are not dishwasher safe and the lid can open if you lay it down. For me it’s worth it. I really like the colors and how cold they keep everything. I keep my water upright so leaking isn’t an issue, but they are not ones my teens can just throw in a backpack so I want to find something a little better for them. I also need to find some good ones for my little boys. If you have ones you suggest please let me know in the comments!!!
You wanted house help! Here you go! Be ready for the gross!
I’ve used a shark mop for years. On occasion I have a housekeeper come. One time she asked me what I was cleaning my floors with because they took her several buckets of water to clean! 😳 lucky or unlucky for me my floors hide dirt so well you couldn’t see anything. When I told her I used the shark she told me that’s just pushing around dirty water. Ewwwww I guess that makes sense!
So I researched. I spent a lot of time on amazon and YouTube and comparison sites finding what’s best for my family! We have 4 boys and 2 dogs. We need something easy that works! As you can see by the gross picture this works!!! It was like mud! So embarrassing and disgusting, but I’m real and I’m here to give you real, honest help.
What I like: works well, separate clean and dirty tanks, light weight, my 9-year-old can do it, easy, it’s like vacuuming with my lightweight Dyson for hard floors (which I no longer need b/c this works on dry mode as well). It also works on thin rugs. You can only imagine what came out of my small inside door mats!
What I don’t: it’s loud (but I use my headphones and listen to books on audible), when you want to add water to the floor you have to squeeze the handle. I wish it was a switch instead of a continuous squeeze. But that’s only for a few seconds at a time so not a huge deal!
A few months ago we started doing detox baths in our house. I have a some health issues that make my body achey. My middle boys are athletes and put a lot of strain on their bodies. My youngest has some tummy issues and doesn’t like to use the restroom. I know, TMI, but with this blog I’m keeping it real. This is life raising 4 boys!
My friend suggested we start taking detox baths with epsom salts. We did and noticed the baths helped a lot, so much so that when we went to an out-of-town tournament I took bags of epsom salt with me and I never use hotel baths! I wanted to know why the epsom salt helped so much so I did a little research and found out it’s all about the detox. I also found some things to add to the bath! I’ll beak it down for you.
A detox bath is one of the ways we can help our body detox.
Toxins are everywhere. When you take your shower the water is full of pollutants, soap and shampoo have chemicals, even toothpaste has yucky stuff in it. There’s no way to get away from all the toxins around us so we need to help our bodies out! Taking a detox bath not only helps us get rid of toxins, but it also helps strengthen our immune system! That’s perfect for me since I have autoimmune diseases.
Detox baths usually have epsom salts in them. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. It helps to release toxins and has other benefits:
Helps with concentration
Help muscles function properly
Help prevent artery hardening and blood clots
Make insulin more effective
Reduce inflammation to relieve pain and muscle cramps
Improves your oxygen use
Improve absorption of nutrients
Help form joint proteins and brain tissue
When I started searching online about detox baths I read to use baking soda as well. Here’s why:
Detoxes and alkalizes the body
Absorbs heavy metals
It increases mineral absorption
Soothes itching and skin irritations
Exfoliates and smoothes skin
It helps neutralize the chemicals in the water
Cleans your hair
It helps alkalize your body
Relieves bites and burns
Ok enough of the why these detox baths help. It’s time to make some fizzy bath salts!
Mix the salt, baking soda and citric acid well. If you choose to, add in a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Let the mixture start to dry.
For a nice foot bath 1/3-2/3 cups fizzy bath salts is great. If you’re taking a bath add more.
*** I rather put my essential oils and mix in right before putting it in the bath. I don’t like essential oils in plastic and I like to change up what I use depending on the mood. Just get some of the mixture in your hand, drop some oils in it, mix and pour in tub.
Everything you put on your skin gets absorbed into your body so I all the ingredients listed are high quality. I also recommend drinking a lot of water the days you take your detox bath. You want to flush all those toxins out!
I found a dress!!!! This one is so soft and comfortable! It has pockets, no sleeves, I could totally sleep in it. I love the patten and the softness of the fabric. It feels like jersey. I followed the chart and ordered a size smaller than usual and it’s too tight. So my advice would be to ignore the size chart and buy your usual size! This dress comes in 8 patterns. I’ve already ordered the white floral in my real size! I’m a jeans girl. Every day is jeans so I am excited to girly up my summer wardrobe! Even though this is a little small I’ll be keeping it because I don’t want to take it off!
As a mom of 4 boys I get asked 2 things ALL THE TIME! What’s your grocery bill and how do you do laundry? Today I’ll tackle laundry hacks.
I have laundry baskets under my laundry room table. The tall baskets underneath are for dirty clothes. I usually wash towels, underwear and bedding on the sanitary cycle together. I don’t sort by color except for whites. I separate heavy items (jeans, thick socks, sweatshirts, thick pajamas) from lightweight stuff (thin shirts, little kid clothes). I’ve never had a color bleed problem and the clothes come out cleaner this way. If you have heavy clothes and light together the heavy will get all the soap and it doesn’t wash evenly. There are very few things I wash on hand wash cycle.
Also in the first picture you see baskets on top of the table. These short ones are for clean clothes. Do NOT put dirty clothes in the clean basket! Here is where I sort by person. If you were a poop head and did not return your clean basket I’ll leave your clothes on a pile on the table and you can deal with them. If 2 people don’t return theirs when I’m ready to sort then they get to sort it all themselves, including mom’s underwear! Each person is responsible for hanging their clothes except my little one but he can put stuff in drawers.
Here is my drying rack for delicate items. I don’t use it as often as I should. I put most in dryer.
My mom has this Rack and I think it’s way better than mine. This one is a cool idea if you want to hang clothes right away. Similar to mine, but mine is a cheap one form Ikea and not super sturdy.
This is my stackable washer and dryer. They give me so much more space in my small laundry room! Also to the right of them I have the basket that’s getting washed next so if I ask someone to put the wash in the dryer they can easily toss in my next load.
Next is soil love from the dollar store. Great for stains. I’ve only used in on whites though. Can you use it on color??? Also Tide Pods, I understand they are more expensive, BUT they save time and mess so if I tend to use them more often than not. I have liquid detergent for large or extra small loads when I want to control the amount of soap.
Last up is a system that I tried and didn’t like. Tried to sort using hanging bags. Hates that method. I put empty essential oil bottles on top to help freshen the room up. Hope this super long post helps someone!
